Implant pain and recovery — what it is actually like

What to expect at each stage from the day of surgery through to the final crown, and which signs mean you should call the clinic.

The surgery itself happens under anaesthetic

Placement is done under local anaesthetic, so most people feel little or nothing during the procedure. That is why so many say it was easier than an extraction. If the prospect frightens you, some clinics offer sedation alongside — ask what the options are.

The harder part is not pain but the swelling and dull ache over the following days. It varies a lot between people, but swelling usually peaks around day two or three and subsides after that.

How recovery actually runs

Stitches come out at around a week, and then you wait for the fixture to integrate with the bone. The usual guidance is roughly two to three months in the lower jaw and three to six in the upper. A bone graft extends it. Most of that waiting is pain-free ordinary life.

Once the wait is over, the gum is opened to connect the abutment, an impression is taken, and the final restoration goes on. Depending on the case, the whole thing spans anywhere from three months to a year. Get the expected schedule for your case in writing.

Signs that warrant a call straight away

It helps to know where ordinary discomfort ends. Swelling that is still growing after three days, pain that painkillers do not control, bleeding that will not stop, or altered sensation in the lip or jaw that persists — those are problem signs. Do not wait for your next appointment.

Which is why "who do I contact if something feels wrong afterwards?" belongs in the consultation. Aftercare starts with having a channel to use.

FAQ

Frequently asked

How painful is implant surgery?

During surgery, local anaesthetic means there is little to feel. The real burden is two or three days of swelling and dull ache afterwards, usually described as controllable with the prescribed painkillers.

Can I work the next day?

For a straightforward placement, most people return to normal the following day. Extensive grafting or several implants at once can swell more, so check what to expect at the consultation and leave room in your schedule.

Can I chew at all while it integrates?

Eat on the opposite side. Soft food is advised for the first few days only. Instructions vary by clinic, so get the post-operative eating guidance on paper.

How long does the swelling last?

It usually peaks at day two or three and has largely settled within a week. Swelling still increasing after three days is outside the normal range — call the clinic.

Can it be done under sedation?

Some clinics offer it. Sedation carries its own cost and conditions such as fasting beforehand, so if the prospect worries you, ask about both options and prices.

Why does the upper jaw take longer?

Upper jaw bone is softer than the lower, so the fixture takes longer to integrate firmly. The usual guidance is two to three months below, three to six above.

What if my lip stays numb?

Altered sensation that continues after the anaesthetic has worn off is a sign the nerve needs checking. Call the clinic that operated straight away rather than waiting for your appointment.

How long is the whole treatment?

Three months to a year, depending on bone condition. Bone grafting or a sinus lift pushes it longer. Ask for a written schedule for your own case so you can compare.
