Dental clinic or dental hospital — what differs
In Korea, "clinic" and "hospital" at the end of a dental practice's name are legal categories, not marketing. Here is what separates them.
The category is set by law
A dental clinic and a dental hospital fall under different categories in Korea's Medical Service Act. A dental hospital has to meet larger facility requirements to open, and the category each practice files with HIRA is public data. The word "hospital" on the sign is a legal indicator of scale.
In practice the overwhelming majority of dental practices in Korea are clinics. Hospitals are rare enough that the name itself tends to read as a signal of size.
The real difference is the division of labour
Hospital-level practices more often divide work between specialists in different fields — the surgical side places the implant, the prosthodontic side restores it. At a clinic, one dentist usually carries the case from start to finish.
Neither is inherently better. Complex cases — extensive grafting, treatment alongside a systemic condition — can favour a practice with the division of labour and the equipment. For a straightforward case, one person seeing it through consistently can be the easier experience.
What to check instead of the category
The category is a starting point. Whichever you choose, the questions are the same: who performs the surgery, how the diagnosis is made, and what the aftercare terms are. All three bear on your treatment far more directly than the category does.
The area comparison pages on this site show each practice's category as filed with HIRA. Reading category, specialists and equipment on one screen makes the judgement much easier.
FAQ
Frequently asked
Are dental hospitals better than dental clinics?
The category is a legal distinction based on facility requirements, not a ranking of quality. There can be differences in division of labour or equipment, but who treats you and how the diagnosis is made are the more direct criteria.
When is a university dental hospital the right choice?
They are strongest with complex cases — a systemic condition, extensive surgery expected, or a referral from another practice. Expect longer waits and more procedure.
Can any practice call itself a dental hospital?
No. It is a category name reserved for institutions licensed after meeting the hospital-level requirements in the Medical Service Act. The actual category is verifiable in HIRA open data.
Some clinics look very large, though?
They do. There are large clinics running dozens of chairs that have grown in scale without changing category. Take the category as reference and check the staffing in the actual data.
Do hospitals charge more?
For non-covered treatment such as implants or orthodontics, each practice sets its own prices regardless of category. Comparing itemised estimates is far more useful than comparing categories.
Which is better for evening and weekend hours?
That too has nothing to do with category and everything to do with each practice's own policy. Hours change, so call before you go.
When do I need a referral letter?
Most dental treatment can be booked without one. Some departments at university hospitals and some specialist clinics do ask for a referral, so check when booking.
How do I see the category on this site?
Each clinic card on an area page shows the HIRA-filed category. The area FAQ also states separately whether any dental hospitals are included in the list.
